17th Street Overlook Garden

Printer-friendly versionSend to friend

In 1996, SSCO invested significant NRP resources into the installation of a 5-block greenway -- decorative sidewalk, lighting and landscaping -- stretching along the I-94 embankment from 3rd Avenue to the LaSalle Community Garden.  The most elaborate of these gardens, the 17th Street Overlook, incorporates several styles of flower garden, with a magnificent view of the downtown skyline beyond.  Community volunteers maintain this garden and maturing trees.

The Stevens Square Community Organization and the Minneapolis Parks and Recreation are joining forces to continue beautifying the 17th street overlook. We have already started with the two flower beds that border the overlook between Stevens and Second and our aim is to create an interpretive garden along the fence area that creates a habitat with native plantings. We would love to get neighbors and families involved in creating this habitat.

On Saturday September 17th beginning at 9am we need volunteers to create this beautiful garden on the 17th Street overlook. The Minneapolis park board is joining forces with us to install a native wildlife habitat garden that will run along the fence area and bordered by the two flower beds that are currently there. Tools and treats provided. Meet at 17th street between 2nd and Stevens. Please come be part of this exciting event!

For information about how to get involved to maintain this garden, contact Robert Skafte at 612.750-3779 or gardening@sscoweb.org.
