Stevens Square Community Organization: Life in the heart of Minneapolis

Emily Peake Memorial Garden, named after a beloved neighbor and well-known American Indian activist, is located at 1913 3rd Avenue S.    The garden was installed in 1994 as part of a larger strategy to combat a blatant open-air drug market at the corner. Gardeners were encouraged to keep on eye on the street and were provided with cell phones (breadbox-size, as was the technology of the time!) with which to call 911. 

Since then, the area's public safety has significantly improved and is home to many local gardeners who rent plots there.
