LaSalle Community Garden was started in 1995, and is located on either side of The Coyle apartment building at 1801 LaSalle Avenue. More than 50 plots are available for rent in this garden, including a wheelchair-accessible bed. In 1998, students from the University of Minnesota Landscape Architecture program designed and built several unique and beautiful architectural elements for the garden, including the wheelchair bed, a wood and metal half-shade structure, and an elaborate watering system of a 20-foot aqueduct and spinning waterwheel. The garden has fully matured flower and herb beds, and a prairie patch. In 2003, SSCO started a program at LaSalle Community Garden in which homeless youths participate in gardening a vegetable plot that is farmed for use by the Groveland Food Shelf at Plymouth Congregational Church, just down the block. LaSalle Community Garden hosts at least one community potluck event each summer.
